I am worried about my child’s communication skills, what is the first step?
Contact us by email or phone. We are happy to discuss your concerns and arrange a time for an initial consultation. The initial consultation involves a detailed discussion with you regarding your concerns and your child’s development. It may also include appropriate assessment procedures and feedback with recommendations. Depending on your child’s age and what your concerns are assessment may include observation, play based assessment or more formal structured assessments.

Where does the speech language therapy take place?
We work in a range of settings including your home, pre-schools and schools. Many children feel most comfortable and are more likely to be talkative in their own home or another familiar environment such as their educational setting. During assessment it can be particularly important to observe your child communicating in his or her own environment.

Who is involved in speech and language therapy sessions?
At least one family member or caregiver will be an active participant in every therapy session with the child. As parents/caregivers you are the most important people in your child’s life. Therapy sessions will focus on demonstrating and practising strategies and activities to use with your child at home. Additional family members or teachers are welcome to participate in therapy sessions (with parental consent).

Is there homework involved with speech and language therapy?
Speech and language therapy does not only happen during your child’s session. We need to give your child opportunities to practice his or her communication skills every day. The speech and language therapist will give you and your child “homework” to complete after each session. This may be specific strategies to use when talking to your child or more structured practise tasks. Home practise is vital to ensure your child makes progress.

How much will therapy cost?
This is a private paying service. Costs vary depending on the type of intervention required and the length of the session. A standard initial assessment usually takes 1-2 hours and is charged at $195. This includes a written summary of the assessment and recommendations for therapy if indicated. If a complex, comprehensive assessment is required, the cost of this will be discussed with you prior to starting the assessment. Therapy hours are charged at $95/hr. Sessions are usually an hour in length. Our prices are inclusive of GST. Any additional costs (for example travel charges, resources or additional formal written reports or correspondence) will be discussed with you as required.

How long does a speech and language therapy session take?
The length of the session will be recommended after the speech and language therapist has assessed your child. The time will differ depending on the age and needs of your child and the therapy approach being taken. The recommended session times are usually 45-minute or 60-minutes.
